More on House Hunting

September 30, 2009

Well, it's been a while, but in my defense my life is pretty boring. About the only news I have has to do with looking for a place to live.

So: I have a house. Kinda, maybe.

I put in an offer on a place in mid-July. Approved short sale, which is supposed to mean that if I put in an offer for the list price the selling banks have already decided they're going to take it.

Someone somewhere along the line was obviously confused about the definition of "approved". The bid itself sat around collecting dust for six weeks until they approved it on September 1st.

Except that the bank told their agent one thing and wrote another on the amended contract -- basically I overbid a little so they could front some of the closing costs, and they were trying to keep an extra $400 of it for themselves. Not a lot compared to the price of the house, but I ain't a friggin' charity.

So after I lobbed my amendment to their amendment back at them, the appraisal happened. And the house is worth $15,000 less than the list price. OK, fire off another addendum invoking the appraisal contingency in the original contract: My offer is now for the appraised value.

Sent that back on the 18th. Got a call Monday saying that I should hear back from the selling bank within 10 business days from last Friday. So if they mean 10 days, that's October 5th. If they mean 10 business days, it's the 9th.

For a contract that I initially signed on July 15th. Nothing like waiting three months for people are too busy stepping on their own dicks to take care of business.
